Breaking Your Alabaster Box

Scripture Reading: Matthew 26: 6–13

“There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat,” Matthew 26:7.

Breaking Your Alabaster Box

Father God, we thank you because if we believe in your Word and agree with your plan, you will answer by saying Amen.

Give us the grace to do a good work unto you, as your Word says, and let your Word work in our lives.

The woman poured her precious ointment on Jesus’ head, “But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor. When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me. For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always. For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.

Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her,” Matthew 26:8–13.

What did this woman do and why was it so valuable? Besides coming to Jesus, she opened an alabaster box of precious ointment and poured it on His head. The ointment was expensive and had a beautiful fragrance. But the disciples of the Lord complained that her offering was too great and was misdirected; they believed it was a wasteful act lacking good judgement.

What is your purpose as a Christian? The alabaster box today holds the gift that the Lord has put in you that you need to pour out. Are you just pouring it upon secular work or are you pouring it upon Jesus? Ministering to Jesus Christ should be your ultimate purpose and goal. Nothing should be too much for you to do for Jesus because He should be the object of your ministry; the one who receives all your praise. Break your alabaster box and redirect your efforts to serving Jesus. When you pour out your gifts upon Jesus, you will be blessed with protection from trouble.  This woman declared her worship and service to Jesus by anointing His head with precious ointment. Jesus valued it and commanded His disciples not to trouble her. The same applies today, for the Lord never changes.  If you are working your hardest to further God’s glory and mockers begin to trouble you, the Lord Almighty Himself will intervene and say, don’t trouble this person for he or she is pouring out for Me.

Not only is the Lord’s protection with you whenever you do a good work for Him, but He also promises that you will leave a great legacy. Jesus told His disciples that the work the woman had done would be told for a memorial of her wherever the gospel was preached.  It is a great priviledge to be considered so valuable to the God of the universe that He wants your service and worship to be remembered. She ministered to Him by washing His feet with her tears and drying them with her hair. She used her crown, the glory of her hair, to minister to His feet; using her highest point for His lowest point in gratitude and worship to her Master.

Prayer Points:

Are you doing a good work for Jesus? If you are not, begin to pray. Prayer is the good work you can do right where you are. Pray for the Kingdom of God, for unity and harmony, for souls to be saved. Lord Jesus, give us the grace to pour out our ministry upon you. The Word of God says, “Touch not my anointed and do my prophets no harm,”

Psalm 105:15.  In your might, intervene and confront those who try to trouble our ministry to you.  You cannot work for the Lord without salvation, so pray along with me if you have not given your life to Jesus, “Dear Lord Jesus, write my name in the book of life. I accept you as my Lord and Saviour. I confess and forsake my sins. Forgive my sins and bless me with your Holy Spirit so I can pour out my gifts upon you.”
