Who Holds Your Reins?

Scripture Reading: Luke 19:30–38
“Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither. And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him,” Luke 19:30–31.

Who Holds Your Reins?

Father God, we thank you for the priviledge of life and the priviledge of life in you. We thank you for this double priviledge we enjoy as Christians: life in the now and life in the eternal. Holy Father, we pray that you give us the grace to give you total control of our lives.

After the disciples found the colt and told its owner that the Lord had need of him, the disciples “brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon. And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way. And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; Saying BLESSED be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest,” Luke 19:35–38.

This is the story of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, but I want us to focus on an unusual participant in that event: the donkey. Because Jesus was riding on that donkey, Jesus was determining its destination. Jesus decided the way for the donkey, including which gates were opened to him and how he was treated. Jesus determined his assignment. The one who sat on top of the donkey determined what went on inside of the donkey; what he heard, and what he thought. Jesus determined his escort on that journey. And because Jesus chose to ride on this particular donkey amongst all the donkeys, he has given this donkey a story that will live forever. I dare say to you today that who is riding you determines your destination and how you are treated on the way. Who rides you determines your assignment, what doors are opened to you, and what goes on inside of you. Who rides you and holds your reins determines what you hear and what you think. Who rides you determines your escort and where you will live forever.

The donkey that Jesus rode can be contrasted with another donkey: the donkey that Balaam rode in the book of Numbers 22. That donkey saw horrors. An angel with a sword was before her as she was journeying. She fell to the ground to save her master. Her master, her rider slapped her. The donkey had to speak supernaturally to survive. She heard curses and experienced contention. That donkey saw horrors and the donkey Jesus rode saw heaven. The donkey the King of kings rode enjoyed a joyful journey. Cloaks and palm fronds were spread on his path and he heard hosannas. May Jesus ride triumphantly in your life today.

When Jesus rides us and holds our reins, it means we are lead by the Holy Spirit; that the Holy Spirit is directing our lives. Some people have had divine opportunities by the leading of the Holy Spirit that caused them to be at a particular place at an appointed time for a divine breakthrough. Many great men and women will tell you that the turning point in their life came when they were not in control; the Holy Spirit was. With the Holy Spirit in charge, they journeyed at the time they were meant to journey, doors were opened for them, and the people they needed to meet were there for them. When the Holy Spirit is leading you, He will inspire you to do great things for God. He will inspire you by giving you assignments that are godly. But when your carnal nature is leading you, you will be shocked at the things you will be led to do.

If you cannot boldly say that Jesus is the one determining the direction of your life, then you have consciously decided to forego all the blessings that He guarantees.

My prayer is that all who read this will be determined that Jesus will hold the reins of their lives. And like that donkey that Jesus rode into Jerusalem, they will experience red carpet treatment.

Prayer Points:

Holy Father, I pray that those who have never given their lives to Jesus will do so now. He will not control what has not been surrendered to Him. Pray with me now, “Lord Jesus hold the reins of my life, take me to great destinations, and let me experience the best life you have designed for me. Write my name in the book of life and let me be counted among the number who are born again and living new lives by your Spirit in Jesus’ name.”

I pray that Jesus, in faithfulness to His Word, will take control of the reins of your life and lead you to His destination here and in eternity. Amen.
