Proper Prophecy
Scripture Reading: 1 Timothy 1:18
“This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare.”
Proper Prophecy
Father God, I thank you today for your Word is settled. I thank you for wisdom and for accurate information.
An appropriate understanding of the role of the prophetic in divine leadership is imperative. Many of us are excited about the prophetic ministry because we desire to know which way to go. We seek direction. Direction is in the Word of God and is also in the prophetic. Prophecy is the speaking forth of the counsel of God. Prophecy has two dimensions. One type of prophecy is forth telling: proclaiming the counsel found in the Word of God by teaching the Bible. The other dimension of prophecy is in the area of foretelling: foretelling what will happen to you in the future.
The purpose of prophecy is to edify the church, to build it up, to encourage, to give direction. It is to say, you still have a future; I see great things ahead for you according to the counsel and Word of God. Prophecy is to exhort, to comfort, to convince, and to convict. When you get a prophetic word that convicts you, it convinces you to change for the better.
The power of prophecy is in its ability to provide direction, to enhance vision. Prayer is enhanced by the prophetic. The prophetic word preserves life. Prophecy can renew a church and take it to a new dimension, where it has never walked before.
Prophecy is vital for spiritual warfare because it helps us to receive strategy for battle. The component of prophecy that has to do with foretelling gives guidance in agreement with God’s Word. Predictive prophecy prepares you to avoid disaster or to be ready for promotion. May God bless us with positive prophetic experiences in Jesus’ name.
Prayer Points:
Father, let us encounter inspired forth-telling and foretelling of events and receive prophetic empowerment, and may our prophetic encounters encourage, warn, direct and always be relevant to your plan for our lives and activate our faith in your Word. Grant us a settled revelation that genuine prophecy identifies problems but brings forth solutions and will not leave us disillusioned. Grant us a settled revelation that the prophetic must be Christ-centered, spirit-inspired, and in agreement with Scripture and God’s will for the season, in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
