It Is Finished

Scripture Reading: John 19:28–30
“After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”

It Is Finished

We thank you, Father God Almighty, for the work on the cross that Jesus did on behalf of everyone who believes. Lord, we thank you for and agree with your redemption plan. We boldly approach your throne because that redemption plan made it possible. For you accomplished it and then said, “It is finished.” Father God Almighty, whatever your Word says, let it be real in our lives and give us the grace to communicate this reality to others.

Jesus said, “It is finished,” bowed His head, and gave up the ghost. His death on the cross purchased us. He did not buy us on sale; He paid even more than full price, because He was sinless but died for sinners like you and me. Since our Lord said, “It is finished,” it should be finished. Everything that He died on the cross to deliver us from must cease from working. Sin is finished because you are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. Our debt is finished; Jesus paid the price for all we owed as a result of our sins. He endured the stripes of the cross for our healing, Isaiah 53:5; 1 Peter 2:24. His death brought an end to death. Because when Jesus died, He went into death and took the stinger out of the bee of death so although death may be flying around, its sting is gone. With this sting gone, hell is finished for those who believe, 1 Corinthians 15:55–57.

When Jesus thirsted and asked for vinegar, He decreed also that thirst is finished. He said if we are thirsty to come unto Him and drink of the living water that flows out of Him, John 7:37–39. And that living water is ever flowing. Lack is finished because Jesus said, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly,” John 10:10. Sorrow is finished: In Him, you will have joy that no man can take away, Isaiah 53:4; John 15:11. Bondage is finished because Jesus, when He was being arrested, said to His captors, “I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these [Jesus’ disciples] go their way,” John 18:8. Jesus subjected Himself to captivity at Gethsemane so that you and I, like His disciples who were with Him, can be free from captivity. Fear is finished. This is affirmed many times in the Word so that you will stop being afraid because Jesus said, “It is finished.”

What an amazing grace that saves wretches as ourselves who were once blind but now can see. So blindness and ignorance are finished, Luke 7:22. And to those lies that the enemy keeps telling you, our Lord Jesus said, “It is finished.”

Prayer Points:

The decree, “It is finished,” cannot begin to operate in your life unless you give your life to Jesus. You can do that now by praying, “Dear Lord Jesus, I surrender my life to you. I confess and forsake my sins. Cleanse me from my sins with your blood. Write my name in the book of life and let me experience the blessings of the finished work of Calvary.”

Father God Almighty, I thank you for the finished work of the cross. I thank you because the work that my Lord did on Good Friday will never be in vain because it is finished. Let sickness, death, hell, hunger, thirst, fear, bondage, lack, ignorance, frustration, sorrow, lies, and borrowing and owing all be finished in our lives in the name of Jesus. Father, we appreciate your atonement and agree with you that it will not be in vain. Amen.
