Children Obey Your Parents
Scripture Reading: Ephesians 6:1–9
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.”
Children Obey Your Parents
Father God, we celebrate you. We thank you that you have designed a good and orderly plan for our lives that is meant to work. We thank you because every disorder, every discord that is making things difficult for us, King of kings and Lord of lords, you come and clarify, come and upgrade, and make us blessed enough to be a blessing in Jesus’ name. Amen.
The Word of God says we are to obey our parents: “Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth,” Ephesians 6:2–3.
To obey our parents and to honour our father and mother are commandments from the Lord that come with blessing. If you see a child who honours his father and mother, there is a promise that the child will live long as stated in Ephesians 6:3.
Sadly a child who does not honour their father and mother is inviting a short life. Honour is expressed not only by acknowledging our parents when we see them or by giving them things; honouring them is also expressed by relating to them with respect even when they are dependent on us; even when they are weak and cannot move. Honouring them is relating to them with the respect you should have had for them originally. Remember that if they had aborted you, you would not be here today. Remember they nurtured you when you were a baby and brought you up, so do not dishonour them.
Dishonouring them will provoke the anger of God. Father, I pray in the name of Jesus that you will give us a revelation of the truth that we need to honour our fathers and mothers. Yes, some parents may be difficult, but God has a word for them: “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord,” verse 4. No matter how difficult your parents are, resolve to honour them for Jesus’ sake. There is also a word for servants, those who are working for people, rendering service. If you are working in an office, for a corporation, in a home, whatever capacity, the Bible says to “… be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of heart, as unto Christ,” verse 5. Wherever you serve you are ministering, because people are watching you; they are looking for Christ in you, so if you bear in mind that you are doing this work as a representative of Jesus, you will do it with humility, obedience, and reverence.
Prayer Points:
May God give us a right relationship with our parents, in our families, and in our work-place. This is possible only when we give our lives to Jesus. Give your life to Jesus now, surrender to Him, make Him Master of your life, and serve Him with all sincerity in Jesus’ name. Amen.
